Windows ME
has a few advancements over Windows 98, but they seem to come at
the cost of reliability and stability. Seemingly the best enhancement
in Windows ME was the ability to browse thumbnail files in the My
Computer interface. If you have a PC still running Windows ME FoxxTech
recommends upgrading to Windows XP (if your hardware supports it)
or "downgrading" back to Windows 98 for stability.
Below are some
helpful tips and hints for users running Windows ME.

Startup
Disk
Normally, you would create a startup disk when you installed Windows
Me. If your startup disk is old (from an earlier version of Windows),
you'll need to make a new startup disk for Windows Me. If you never
made a startup disk, or if you have lost it, now is a great time
to make a new one. It's easy.
To create a
boot disk, you will need a blank, 1.2 megabyte (MB) disk. You may
also need your Windows Me CD, so be sure to have it handy. To create
a startup disk:
Click Start,
point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove
Programs.
Click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk.
Label a floppy disk "Windows Me Startup Disk," insert
the disk in your floppy drive when prompted, and then click OK.
Windows Me will begin to copy files to the floppy disk.
When copying is complete, click OK, and then store the disk in a
safe place.
Maintenance
is best performed in Safe Mode, once you have
restarted your Windows ME machine in Safe Mode run Scandisk
Click the Start button.
Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools,
and then click ScanDisk.
Click the drive you want to scan, and then choose either the Standard
or the Thorough test.
Click Start.
Then
run the Defrag program:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System
Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
Click the Settings button, select the options you want (to ensure
fastest startup of programs, select the first check box), and then
click OK.
Choose the drive you want to defragment from the drop-down menu,
and then click OK.
Using
System Restore (Antivirus Programs will need to be re-installed
after use)
To restore your computer settings from an earlier time:
Click the Start
button.
Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools,
and then click System Restore.
Choose Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
Click a day on the calendar, click the restore point description,
and then click Next.
Make sure you have closed all your files and open programs, and
then click OK to close the dialog box.
Click Next.
Your system will revert to its previous settings, your time will
return to its usual dimensions, and you can go full speed ahead.
